Notifications
This guide shows you how to read and clear your Notifications in the Activity Hub, and how to choose which events alert you in-app and by email. A notification tells you about an event relevant to you: an Import you started that finished or failed, someone mentioning you in a Comment, or a reply to one of your comments.
- Role required: an internal role — Administrator, Data Manager, Manager, or Staff. Notification Preferences, under Account, are available to any signed-in user.
- Scope: you see only your own notifications.
Notification types
Erde sends five types of notification. Each has a default severity and a default delivery channel; you can change the channels per type (see Set your notification preferences). Severity is shown on each notification as a colored chip.
| Title | When it fires | Severity | In-app default | Email default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Import validated | Background validation of an import you started finishes | Info | On | Off |
| Import completed | An import you started finishes successfully | Success | On | On |
| Import failed | An import you started fails to commit | Error | On | On |
| Mentioned in a comment | Someone @mentions you in a comment | Info | On | On |
| Reply to my comment | Someone replies to your comment | Info | On | Off |
The four severities are Info, Success, Warning, and Error.
Read and clear notifications
The Activity Hub nav item shows an unread indicator, and the Notifications card shows an unread badge, whenever you have unread notifications.
- Go to Activity Hub → Notifications (
/activity-hub/notifications). The list shows one row per notification, with its time, a severity chip, a title, and a body. - To narrow the list to what you have not yet read, select Unread only. Select Show all to return to the full list.
- Select a row to open the linked record. A mention or reply opens the record's Activity Timeline with the comment in context; an import notification opens that import. Opening a notification marks it read.
- To clear everything at once, select Mark all read. This button is disabled when nothing is unread.
A notification stays unread until you open it or use Mark all read. When you open Notifications from a dashboard action — a mention or a reply — the list arrives filtered to that event type; a chip shows the active filter, and you clear it with its × to see everything.
Erde keeps your notification history tidy on its own. Notifications you have already read are removed automatically after 90 days. Unread notifications are never removed, however old they are, so nothing you have not yet seen ever disappears from the list or the unread badge. Administrators can change the 90-day window — see Server maintenance.
Set your notification preferences
Choose which types notify you in-app and by email. Defaults match the table in Notification types.
- Go to Account → Notification Preferences (
/account/notifications). - For each type, set the In-app and Email toggles.
- To return a type to its shipped default, select Reset to default next to it. (This appears only on a type you have changed.)
Email is sent only when an administrator has configured outgoing email (SMTP) — see System settings. While SMTP is unconfigured, the Email toggle is disabled and a banner says so; toggling it has no effect. For account-level tasks, see Account management.
Result
Your read and unread state is saved as you go: the unread indicator on the Activity Hub nav item and the badge on the Notifications card update to match, and an opened or marked-read notification no longer counts as unread. Your preference choices take effect for the next notification of that type — an in-app notification appears in the list, and an email is delivered when SMTP is configured.
When email is enabled and SMTP is configured, a background worker delivers each notification email and records the outcome of every attempt. A delivery that was interrupted before any attempt was recorded is re-sent later.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| No notification emails arrive | Outgoing email (SMTP) is not configured | Have an administrator configure email in System settings; until then, in-app notifications still appear |
| The Email toggle is disabled on the preferences page | SMTP is not configured, so email cannot be sent | Configure SMTP (see above); the toggle enables once email is available |
| You receive no replies-to-comment emails | Reply to my comment defaults to email off | Turn on its Email toggle at Account → Notification Preferences |
| A new notification does not appear | The unread filter is hiding read items, or a type filter is active | Select Show all and clear any active type filter with its × |
