Manage location aliases
A Location often goes by more than one name: a regulatory ID assigned by an agency, a historical name from earlier work, or an identifier used in another system. Record these alternate names as aliases so the Location stays findable under any of them. Aliases live on the Location's Aliases tab.
Before you start
- Permission: You need permission to add data to the Site that owns the Location. Editing or deleting an alias needs permission to edit that Site's data.
- Prerequisites: The Location must exist — see Add a location and its field artifact.
Steps

Go to Data Management → Sites →
{your Site}→ Locations →{your Location}, then select the Aliases tab. -
Select Add Alias. The alias form opens.

Enter the fields:
Field Required What to enter Type Yes The kind of alias — see the table below Alias Yes The alternate identifier or name -
Select Add. The alias appears in the list.
Alias types
| Type | Use for |
|---|---|
| Regulatory ID | An identifier assigned by a regulator or program |
| Historical Name | A name the Location was known by in earlier work |
| External System ID | An identifier used in another system Erde exchanges data with |
| Other | Any alias that doesn't fit the categories above |
Result
The Aliases tab lists each alias with its Type and value. Edit or delete any alias from its row menu.
